Nuclear Plant Hit By Airbus A 380*

* This is a fictitous event. The story was developed in the context of the simulation of the UNFCCC in Barcelona.

At 8.29 this morning the incredible has happened: The biggest airplane of the world, the Airbus A 380, crashed into a nuclear plant in Flamanville, France.

More than 400 passengers were onboard, with no chance at survival. A fire 200 meters in height is still burning, and can be seen from as far away as Paris. It is not yet clear whether nuclear radiation has leaked from the reactor, but officials have confirmed that the cooling systems are non-functional.

The airplane was fully fueled for a long way to São Paolo in Brazil, and experts wonder whether such a large volume of kerosene could increase the likelihood of an explosion breaching the reactor.

Officials have called for residents to leave the area immediately.

The number of deaths remains unknown.

While the reason for the plane crash is still unclear, a terrorist attack cannot be excluded.

  1. The tragic incident in France has overwhelmed all of us and leaves us all in a state of shock. Even though now it is the time for rumours and speculations and "people who always knew better", we should still not lose sight of the facts:

Fact is: Nuclear power STILL has the best safety record of all major energy sources. The results for the top four sources were:
    •Coal 6,400 total deaths
    •Hydro power 4,000 total deaths
    •Natural gas: 1,200 total deaths
    •Nuclear power: 431 total deaths

Fact is: Even former Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore has lately shared his support for nuclear power and revised his , misconceptions about this energy source that is key to achieving the goal of greenhouse-gas emissions are still widespread.

Fact is: Nuclear power simply makes economic sense. Maintenance and fuel costs per kilowatt-hour for nuclear plants are more than twice those for hydroelectric, but nearly a third less than those for fossil steam energy and two-thirds less than either gas turbine energy or small-scale photovoltaic or wind energy. Nuclear energy also has the lowest production costs outside of hydroelectric power plants – approximately 1.7 cents per kilowatt hour.

Fact is: A continuous supply of electricity is an essential requisite for improving the living of standard hundreds of millions of impoverished people in the developing countries. Let us put an end to this misery NOW! Nuclear power is the ONLY energy source that could put an end to this misery in the medium-short term.

Fact is: Fuel disposal facilities adhere to highest safety rules. Used nuclear fuel is safely stored at plant sites and well-protected by a combination of sturdy plant construction, state-of-the-art surveillance and detection equipment, and armed, well-trained security forces.

Fact is: Nuclear power does not emit greenhouse gases. Nuclear power plants generate large amounts of electricity safely and reliably without producing harmful emissions and are therefore a CLEAN and FUTURE-ORIENTED Source of Energy that has to be used in order to effectively combat GCC.

Let’s stop talking ideologies – and start talking facts!

  2. Greenpeace has stated that the world will experience disasters like todays terrible happening in France several times, at the latest yesterday. Such incidents will happen more frequently if we continue to construct nuclear power plants. Greenpeace highlights the importance of combating nuclear power, and hopes more countries realize the danger of this technology.
